Evan jolted awake to a pounding on his door. It was unnerving especially since he hadn’t buzzed anybody into the building. He wondered if one of his neighbors was knocking. He got up quickly, pulling on a pair of boxers, tripping towards the door. Whoever was there pounded again.

“I’m coming, Jesus,” Evan said.

Jason was standing there fidgeting with his car keys, hair askew, dark crescents smudged under his eyes.

“Hey, Evan,” Jason said as if it wasn’t some ungodly hour of the morning.

“Wh-what are you doing here? What time is it?” Evan asked groggily.

“Can I come in?” Jason asked, leaning against the doorframe.

“Yeah,” Evan said taking a step back. “What’s going on?”

Jason stepped inside, pushed the door closed behind him and pulled Evan into a frenzied kiss. Evan melted into Jason’s embrace as his tongue pushed forward, invading his mouth, swiping madly around. His hands pulled him close, gripping his ass. Jason moaned and pressed forward roughly.

“Wait, wait,” Evan said quickly pushing Jason back a bit. “What is going on? What are you doing here?”

“I had to see you,” Jason said gripping Evan’s shirt roughly as he kissed him again, panting when he pulled back before turning his head and diving back at Evan’s lips. Jason’s body hummed with arousal. Warmth poured off his skin, through his clothes. He pulled Evan close again pressing against his bare skin. His passion was contagious; it rolled off him in intoxicating waves, but Evan took a deep breath and pushed him away again gently.

“We’re not supposed to mess around without Sarah. It’s one of the rules,” Evan said.

Jason bit his lip and stared into Evan’s face. A light sheen of sweat coated his forehead, his features pulled into a grimace, and he breathed out a long stuttering breath. He leaned forward again, but Evan put a hand on his chest, trying desperately to reign in his own growing arousal and understand what was going on.

“Jase,” Evan began. Jason groaned and buried his face in the crook of Evan’s shoulder, hugging him close, nuzzling against his skin. His tongue flicked out and he licked him slowly. “Fuuck, Jase. Tell me what’s happening.”

Evan pried him away once more trying to create some distance between their rapidly overheating bodies. Jason stood, sweaty, panting, hands moving over Evan’s shoulders and biceps. Evan gripped Jason’s shoulders and gave him a little shake, then grasped his chin bringing their gazes to meet. Jason finally stopped petting and groping him, pulling in a deep sigh.

“I…I…” Jason sputtered. He let out another belabored sigh and pushed past Evan into his tiny kitchen. “Can I have some water?”

“OK,” Evan said, waving a hand and rolling his eyes as he followed Jason into the kitchen. He poured a glass of water and handed it to Jason, who gulped down half of it, stifled a hiccup then looked at Evan.

“What is going on Jase?” Evan asked.

“I…” Jason closed his eyes and pulled in a deep breath. He opened his eyes and stared at Evan. “I was sitting alone in the living room. Sarah left to visit her parents yesterday.” Evan nodded. Sarah had been talking about the visit all week. It had been almost a year since she had seen her parents.

“Right, yes,” Evan said. “I took her to the airport, since you had a music lesson.”

Jason nodded, then sucked down more water.

“Our plans didn’t align,” Jason said. “We…the three of us haven’t gotten together in months.”

Evan looked at the ground and ran a hand through his hair. It had been his fault. He knew that he was beginning to… had already caught feelings for Jason. And he knew that Sarah had noticed that. Bringing feelings into their current situation wouldn’t work. The rules laden, just sex between dudes while Sarah watched situation, left no space for feelings to become involved. He’d thrown himself into Grindr hookups and actually dated someone for a hot minute.

“Yeah, I know Jase,” Evan said finally bringing his gaze back to Jason’s. “I just… I sort of started seeing someone.”

Jason’s face twisted into an ugly mask of jealousy, there for a moment until he forced it back to neutrality. He leaned back on the counter, setting his empty glass down with a loud clack.

“Are you…are you still seeing them?” Jason asked.

“We broke up last week,” Evan said.

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re not,” Evan shot back. Jason looked at the ground. “What are you doing here Jase?”

Jason brought his eyes up to meet Evan’s and there was so much desperation, hunger and want there.

“I can’t do this anymore Evan. I…I don’t want to do the rules anymore. I think I…” Jason looked down at his feet, running a hand over his hair. “I think I want you.”

“You want me?” Evan asked. His heart leapt to his throat, and he swallowed hard against the agonizing beating there.

“I do. I want you so bad.” Jason took a step towards him. Evan bit his lip, clasping his elbows in his hands, fighting the urge to throw himself into Jason’s arms.

Jason took another tentative step forward, then a second step more confident this time, his arms hanging at his sides, hands unconsciously clenching and unclenching. Evan stepped back, but his boxer shorts did a poor job of concealing the growing response to the thought of Jason wanting him, really wanting him.

“Jase, I mean… what about Sarah? You want to… break up with her?” he asked quietly.

Jason’s eyes glassed over immediately, tears balancing precariously along the rims, and he shook his head quickly. “I don’t want to break up with Sarah.”

Evan snorted shortly and crossed his arms over his chest looking away for a second. Jason approached him slowly, as one might approach a skittish stray cat. He held out one hand and placed it gently on his cheek. The other hand rested at his hip, stroking slowly around to his back, pulling him close.

“I don’t want to hurt her,” Evan said quietly as his arms gradually loosened, then circled Jason’s neck.

“Neither do I,” Jason replied, holding Evan firmly to his body.

“I don’t want to get hurt,” Evan admitted in a whisper.

“I don’t want you to get hurt either.” Jason’s reply was just as quiet, as his thumb ran over and over Evan’s cheek. He could feel the hard heat of Jason’s growing erection pressing against his own. Jason cupped a hand around one of Evan’s ass cheeks and squeezed letting out a long groaning breath. “But I can’t fight this anymore.”

Jason closed his eyes and rested his forehead on Evan’s. Evan tilted his head up and brought his lips lightly to Jason’s. He whimpered as Jason’s hand on his cheek circled to the back of his head, holding him firmly in the kiss, which deepened as the two men pressed closer together.

The urgency of the kiss increased as their heart rates rose. Tongues swished together, exploring the familiar territories of mouths, necks, and ears. Jason’s arms wrapped tight around Evan as the shorter man peppered kisses up and down Jason’s neck. He lifted him slightly, rubbing hard cocks together, bringing moans up their throats.

“Jase,” Evan whimpered.

“Evs,” Jason groaned.

Evan squirmed against Jason, so he set him back on his feet, but kept a hold on him, worried he was going to start trying to put an end to this again. But instead, he rubbed his hand over the hard bulge in Jason’s sweatpants. His fingers hooked into the waistband of sweatpants and boxers and hauled them down as he got to his knees.

Jason stared down at him running fingers through his hair. Evan looked up at him and ran his tongue along the underside of Jason’s cock. Jason bit his lip against a small groan. He circled the glans, sticky and wet with precum.

“Mmmm,” Evan purred as he lapped up the moisture dripping from Jason’s cock.

Jason grinned; lower lip still trapped under his teeth and his fingers twisted into Evan’s hair. Evan’s mouth dropped open and he gripped the base of Jason’s hard dick with one hand. In one fell swoop Evan devoured Jason’s cock. Jason gasped as Evan’s mouth enveloped his cock in wet heat. He groaned as Evan brought his mouth back up, sucking, hand pumping upward as he did.

“Ooohh, yeah,” Jason moaned, hand still twisted in Evan’s hair.

Evan brought his other hand up to massage Jason’s balls. He pushed his finger back, rubbing along his perineum, cupping the soft skin of his testicles in his palm. He pushed back down gagging roughly, with an audible noise. Jason whined and his hips ticked forward. Gradually, Evan’s bobbing became faster, his gagging became louder.

Jason’s breath hitched and he stared down at Evan’s head, taking another fistful of hair in his other hand. Panting, and whining he moved Evan’s head over his hard cock, hips pounding savagely forward. Evan looked up at him as he pounded into his throat, choking him.

“Ooohh, god,” Jason whined, pounding harder.

The sight of Evan’s mouth open and drooling all over his cock, his eyes streaming, the rough gagging was enough to send him over the edge. He pounded into Evan’s mouth, his tingling balls rising and twitching as his cock burst. Evan gagged again, sending Jason’s cum splattering over his cock and abdomen.

“Fuck! AH!” Jason cried out as he burst again.

He rolled his hips slowly as Evan dutifully sucked his cock dry. He pulled off of Jason’s messy cock, stood quickly and pulled him into a kiss, depositing his own cum into his mouth. Jason groaned, swallowing it down, licking eagerly around Evan’s mouth. Shoving one hand down Evan’s boxers, he grabbed an ass cheek and pulled it aside, rubbing a finger over his asshole.

“Oh! No… babes,” Evan said quietly. “I haven’t cleaned up. It’s not ready.”

Jason trailed his mouth over Evan’s neck, licking and kissing him.

“What do you mean?” Jason said.

“Well…” Evan sighed. Since the rules of their situation stipulated that the two men weren’t allowed to do anal, the gaps in Jason’s knowledge of the sex act were suddenly very clear. “It’s a butt Jason. It does things that butts are meant to do and if we want to use it for fucking, there are certain things I need to do to clean up and clean out before that happens.”

“Oh?” Jason paused thinking. “Ooohhh! Wow, I’m a fucking idiot.” Jason’s face flushed deep red, and he pulled his hand away.

“You’re not a fucking idiot, you’ve just never done anal before,” Evan said. “I mean I assume.”

“You assume right,” Jason said. “I’m sorry. I’m just used to… well… I mean…”

“You don’t have to explain babes. I get it,” Evan pulled away and rubbed at the back of his neck.

He had been so horny a second ago, sporting a raging boner from the messy blowjob he’d given. But now as their pause extended his mind went to Sarah and a massive wave of guilt flowed through him sucking away the arousal. If his ass had been prepared, he would have happily messed around with Jason until he was hard again and ready to top him. Evan sighed roughly and Jason regarded him, seeming to pick up on what was bugging him.

“Evs,” Jason began.

“Jase, you shouldn’t even be here,” Evan said. “I mean, god we’re really fucking things up. Sarah’s going to be mad this time for sure. Any reasonable person would be!”

“I…I know. I just,” Jason held Evan’s hands in his. “I just don’t care. I mean, I do! I do care, but…fuck…Evan.”

Jason cupped his cheek again.

“I know Jase,” Evan said planting a kiss to his palm. “We can’t do this though. She’s back in a few days, right?”

“A week and a half Evs,” Jason said.

“God, that’s a long fucking time,” Evan said his face falling.

“Let me spend the night? It’s late…early.” Evan glanced at the clock, which read 3am. “I’ll go home in the morning. Can I just? I want to hold you, cuddle up with you,” Jason said quietly taking another step towards him.

Evan sighed deeply, looking at the clock again. Jason did live pretty far from him. Even without traffic it would take him at least thirty minutes to get home.

“OK, but you have to leave in the morning,” Evan said.

“I will,” Jason promised.

Jason followed Evan to his room where the two climbed into bed, sliding under the blankets. Jason scooted close to Evan curling himself around his back, one arm tucked under the pillows, the other wrapped at Evan’s chest. Their fingers twined together, and Jason kissed the back of Evan’s neck. Evan clutched at Jason’s hand, kissing his fingers quickly, snuggling as close as possible to him. They fell asleep immediately.

Sarah woke up abruptly around 2:30am. She glanced at the clock in her childhood bedroom and stretched. She had no idea what had woken her up. She glanced at her phone, turning it on quickly. The screen, although at the dimmest setting still burned her eyes as she saw no texts, calls or notifications.

What the hell had woken her? She sat up slowly, swung her legs out from under the blankets and got out of bed. She checked the house silently. Her parents slept in their room, the door cracked a bit, her dad’s snores echoing down the hallway. Their chihuahua was a tiny white lump curled between them. The cats were awake, staring out the front window and looked annoyed to see her when she ran her hand over their spines.

“What’s out there, Flotsam, Jetsam?” she asked. Jetsam, the grumpy tortie, meowed at her but Flotsam just jumped down from the window. Nothing was disturbed out here, so it didn’t look like the cats had been causing trouble. After getting a glass of water, she padded back to her bedroom and settled in again trying to get back to sleep.

The next morning, she woke late around 10:30am. Stretching grandly she rolled leisurely out of bed and had breakfast with her parents. Afterwards, she went on a walk with her mom and had a shower before she even thought about checking her phone.

Aside from the handful of work emails, there were just two messages, one from Jason and one from Evan. Her stomach flipped and she wasn’t sure why. Jason’s message was simple, I <3 U I miss U. Evan’s brought her heart to her throat, I fucked up not coming over before you left. I’m sorry.

“Fuck…” Sarah muttered. Her thumb hovered over the call button, the fear building in her stomach, rising up her throat. Finally with a deep breath she hit the call button.

“Sarah?” Evan answered on the first ring.

“Hey Evan,” Sarah said. “Your text had me…confused, worried I’m not sure. Are you OK?”

“Uhm…” Evan’s voice cracked, and he cleared his throat harshly. “I’ve been avoiding you and Jason.”

“I know Evs,” Sarah said quietly. “We’ve been missing you.”

Something akin to a sob crackled over the line.

“Something happened last night,” Evan said.

“Are you OK?” Sarah asked.

“Physically. Yes,” Evan said. “Mentally I’m a mess. I think I killed our friendship last night.” His voice was a harsh whisper and Sarah wondered if he was in their shared office.

“Oh, Evs,” Sarah said sitting on the bed. “I’m sure you didn’t kill our friendship.”

“Jason slept over last night,” Evan said abruptly.

Sarah closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She knew this would happen, deep down she knew. Her eyes pricked with tears and heat ran up her throat. Why had Evan pretended to be busy the night before she left? This could have been taken care of, in a responsible way, in a way that gave her some illusion of control and closure.

“I thought this might happen,” Sarah said quietly.

“You…you did?” Evan asked.

“Evs, Jason has been so morose for months,” Sarah said. “He tries to hide it, but he’s really missed you. I’ve missed you,” she repeated.

Evan was openly crying now.

“I’m sorry, Sarah. I’m sorry,” he sputtered.

“Shhh, Evan, it’s…it’s going to be alright,” Sarah said.

“How? I’ve ruined everything and now I’m leaning on you, the person I’ve betrayed. What kind of fucking asshole am I?” Evan spat. Sarah recognized that the vitriol in his voice was not meant for her.

“Evan, I won’t have you talking about my friend that way,” Sarah said. A tickle on her cheek and a lump in her throat told her she’d started crying as well. She swiped away the tear quickly. “This is why I wanted you to come over before I left.” Evan didn’t reply, just kept quietly weeping, his sniffles were the only indication that he was still on the line. “Evs?”

“Yeah,” he asked in a tiny voice. He sounded very much like a small child in trouble with a parent.

“Keep him company for me while I’m gone,” Sarah said simply. “We’ll talk when I get home.”

“But…” Evan began.

“No buts, OK? Just…keep him company.”

There was a long pause where neither Evan nor Sarah said anything. They simply sat in each other’s presence on the phone.

“OK,” Evan finally said.

“See you in a few days?” Sarah asked.

“Yeah,” Evan confirmed.

Sarah hung up, sighed and put her phone on the nightstand for a moment. She shook out her hands and took a few deep breaths. Then she texted Jason back, telling him to keep Evan company while she was gone. Jason called, but Sarah didn’t answer. She didn’t talk to either man again until the night before she returned to confirm she had a ride home from the airport.
